Diets - Do They Even Work?

Diets: Do they even Work?

Diet: The dreaded 4-letter word.  These days a new diet fad comes along every six months--no carb, no fat, no protein. All diets seem to be about deprivation--giving something up. If you take away the letter 'T'  in diet you are left with the word 'die'. For some people, a diet is seen as a way of punishing themselves for past transgressions of eating without any discipline or awareness of consequences for what they eat. When we think about how dreaded the word 'diet' has become, it's amazing to think that the concept was invented less than 100 years ago.

Like pharmaceutical drugs that may be used to mask or divert symptom patterns, diets are often only a quick-fix to serious, underlying issues.

Contrary to popular opinion, people aren't overweight only because of the amount of food they eat or a lack of exercise.  If this were the case, diets would work nearly 100% of the time.

People can be overweight due to many different factors that are unique to the individual. Some people have emotional reasons for their weight. Some might use food as a substitute for love, and others need some extra padding to protect them from the cruel world.

Habits also play a large role in weight. Many people have habits they consciously or unconsciously picked up from their parents that facilitate weight gain.  These people might blame their DNA for their 'weight problems', when in reality it is their patterns of living that have caused their weight issue, not their patterns of molecular material.

And finally, many people simply haven't discovered the difference between high nutrient, metabolism-inducing foods and low nutrient, fat-inducing foods. These people will simply cut back on the amount of food they eat, without realizing that to lose weight, they might be more successful by changing the types of food they eat.

A temporary diet may provide a quick fix to weight issues.  But once dieters return to their normal lifestyle, they continue with old habits, emotions, and food choices that caused the weight gain in the first place.

Thus, if the goal is to be slim and trim for life, one must live a slim and trim life.

It may initially cost more, it may take more time to get results, and it may be hard to break old habits and patterns. In the end, however, it is worth the struggle. You will feel better and look better. You will be healthier and have a higher quality of life. You will maintain a zest for life and your self-esteem will remain intact.

As always, the choice is yours. You can apply a quick fix--a diet to quickly drop a few pounds. Or you can take that road less traveled, and begin to change your life for the long term one day at a time.

  1. Perky's Review of Trace Minerals:
    Product Rating
I wish I could say the trace minerals gave me back something I had lost with age (77), but instead they gave me something I have never had: strong nails and shiny hair which is now growing back after several surgeries. I just had my first perfect dental appointment in many years. One tooth which had started to decay had healed over and is strong...

    Product Rating
I started taking trace minerals for the general health benefit it would give me. But then I noticed that it helped my knees stop hurting. I had suffered for years with knee pain. No doctor could offer relief. The trace minerals keep me pain free!
