The Healing Power of Forgiveness

As a quick exercise to show the importance of forgiveness, think back to a past event that made you angry. Perhaps someone was exceptionally mean or did something nasty to you. However, just by thinking of this past situation, your body is now perceiving danger (fight or flight mode) even though there is no physical threat. It is not hard to imagine, then, how these pent-up past events can lead to stress, a lowered immune system, and a state of dis-ease.

What's the solution then? Not to think of this past event at all? Unfortunately, that is not a good solution as your subconscious mind is still affected by this event whether you are thinking about it or not. And if you try not to think about it, what you have just done is to "think about it."

The true, permanent solution is forgiveness.

By practicing forgiveness, you can release the emotional charge of past unpleasant experiences. The list can include emotional/traumatic situations, events regarded as a personal attack, and incidents of feeling wronged, misunderstood, cheated, or violated. The list is endless.

Some people have difficulty with forgiveness because they believe that by forgiving the other person, they are approving the other person's actions. People's behavior can be dastardly. So forgiveness is not about condoning someone else's behavior. Rather, forgiveness is done for you, for your own health's sake. When you hold onto hurts and grudges, you are controlled by the other person or event. As much as you might despise the other person, if you cannot forgive them, you are forever affected by them.

So forgive the other person for your own health and sanity. As long as you hold onto that grudge or hurt, you cannot truly be free. And frequently, your health will suffer.

Another barrier some folks might encounter is that they actually like holding onto a past event. This past event can be used as an excuse for their current state of health or it can be held onto like a badge of honor, even as a part of their identity. Whenever you are ready to move on and improve your health and sense of well-being, forgiveness is a great place to start.

There are five steps for true forgiveness. Each step is to be carried out with feeling and emotion. You do not have to be physically present with the other people involved. Rather, you can do each of these forgiveness steps "in your mind." These steps can even be done if the other person is no longer living.

1. Forgive yourself for allowing this situation to affect your life and in turn the quality of your life/health.

2. Forgive the other person/persons for any harm they caused you.

3. In your mind, give the other person/persons permission to forgive you for any harm you may have caused them. Remember, it takes two people to tangle.

4. Find the good in every situation. What lesson can you learn? Why are you a better person because of this event? By learning a lesson, you can begin to transform a negative experience into a valuable experience. Be thankful for the opportunity to learn whatever lesson it is that you need to learn.

5. If this past event involves other people, wish them well and mean it.

When you are done, you typically feel a release in your body. You might even cry. This is your body releasing the toxins of your negative pent-up emotions. Congratulations, the healing can now begin!

Practice these five steps of true forgiveness on a regular basis.
